The arch-presbyterial church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, or St. Mary's Basilica, is one of the symbols of Cracow's Main Square. It is here that the famous altar of Wit Stwosz is housed, and every hour you will hear a bugle call played to the four directions of the world from one of the towers.
St. Mary's Basilica, holding the status of basilica minor since 1962, is one of the most important churches in the capital of Lesser Poland. Its greatest attraction is the altar of Wit Stwosz, a medieval sculptural masterpiece. Also noteworthy are the stellar polychrome vault by Jan Matejko, stained glass windows designed by Stanislaw Wyspianski and Jozef Mehoffer, among others, the Slacker crucifix carved in stone by Wit Stwosz and the chapel under the lower tower.
